A national strategy
Ethiopia is the first African country that developed a national strategy for the expansion of the pharmaceutical sector.
The Government of Ethiopia (GoE) wants to make Ethiopia a continental pharmaceutical hub. To this end, a specialized industrial park (Kilinto Industrial Park) located close to Addis Ababa will shortly come into operation.
In addition to supplying competitive inputs (low electricity rate, cheap manual labour, etc.) and giving price preference in public procurement, the GoE offers attractive fiscal incentives to investments in the pharmaceutical industry.
With a 15% growth rate, the Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical market is thriving. The market is expected to reach USD 1 billion by 2020.
Moreover, outstanding export opportunities exist, especially in Africa (the African pharmaceutical market is estimated at USD 20 billion).
